The backbone of market economies and free democracies relies on safety and security. In the context of globalisation, societies are facing social challenges that are growing in scale and sophistication, and reaching from mass migration, social fragmentation and polarisation to organised crime. The interconnectedness of safety and security issues becomes especially visible in a city like Rotterdam, with its ethnically diverse population and its harbour of European and global logistical importance.
Safety and security challenges cannot be addressed by single-actors, but require more ambitious and coordinated approaches. Companies are increasingly expected to take their responsibility in societal issues and to co-create innovative solutions within new alliances, often coming from the public sector. An important condition for the co-creation of solutions is a common understanding of the risks and opportunities.
The international symposium on Security Narratives aims at contributing to a common understanding by addressing security challenges from multiple perspectives. We bring together academics and practitioners from different fields to exchange their perspectives and experiences, thus their “security narratives”. Let’s listen to, talk about, exchange, get inspired by and debate security narratives!
We here at CESAM will host this symposium on the 9th of March 2018 at Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The symposium will consist of keynote speeches, co-creation workshops and a panel discussion. The international contributors will come from diverse backgrounds (public and private sector, and academics from management, information technology, and criminology).
The symposium will be conducted in the context of a Knowledge Alliance on International Security Management (ISM-KA, www.ism-ka.eu) and will be followed in the afternoon by my inaugural address.
Save the date on your Outlook calendar, Synch it to iCal or use Post-it notes – we are looking forward to seeing you on the 9th of March 2018 here in Rotterdam! More details will follow.
Best regards,
Prof. Dr. Gabriele Jacobs
